What is a Visceral Adipose tissue?

Visceral fat is body fat that is stored within the abdominal cavity and surrounds vital internal organs such as the liver, pancreas and intestines. It is often referred to as ‘active fat’ because this type of fat plays a potentially dangerous role affecting how our hormones function.

What are the health risks associated with VAT?

Some visceral fat is normal but those with a larger amount of visceral fat may be exposed to increased risks of the following health conditions.

  • Alzheimer’s disease
  • Heart disease
  • Breast cancer
  • Type 2 diabetes
  • Colorectal cancer

What will a VAT screening tell me?

A VAT screening provides a more accurate result than a waist circumference measurement or a BMI calculation. The screening scans the body to provide an accurate measurement of Visceral fat. The screening is cost effective and can provide you and your physician with information about your health risks.
